Key Tax Deadlines for February 2026: Your Personal Guide

February ushers in critical tax deadlines that individuals need to keep on their radar. This essential guide walks you through options for estimated tax payments, how to report tips, and deadlines for submitting withholding exemptions using Form W-4.

February 2: Estimated Tax Payment Deadline

If you missed submitting your last estimated tax payment by January 15, 2026, consider filing your personal income tax return (Form 1040 or 1040-SR) for 2025 by February 2. By submitting your return with any due taxes by January 31, you avoid late payment penalties on your final installment. Should this not be feasible, aim to complete your filing and payments by April 15.

February 10: Reporting Tips for Employees

For employees earning $20 or more in tips throughout January, it’s crucial to report these to your employer. Utilize IRS Form 4070 or a personal statement that includes your essential details: name, address, signature, and Social Security number, along with your employer’s information. Don’t forget to specify the period the report covers and the total tips received.

Your employer will deduct FICA and income tax withholdings from your wages based on these tips. If your regular income is insufficient for these withholdings, any uncollected amounts will be reported in box 8 of your W-2, and you’ll need to pay this when filing your annual return.

February 17: Submit New W-4 for Withholding Exemption

Those claiming exemption from withholding taxes must submit a new Form W-4 by this date to extend the exemption into the new tax year. Make sure your employer has your updated form to avoid unnecessary tax withholdings from your earnings.

Adjustments for Weekends and Holidays

If any of these deadlines fall on a weekend or a legal holiday, don’t worry. The due date is automatically pushed to the following business day that isn’t also a legal holiday, allowing you additional time to comply.

Extensions Due to Disaster Areas

Should you live in an area designated as a disaster zone, tax deadlines are extended automatically. Check FEMA and IRS websites for the latest updates on disaster declarations and applicable filing extensions:
