Essential January 2026 Tax Deadlines for Businesses

The beginning of a new year is a crucial time for businesses to stay ahead of important tax deadlines. January 2026 presents significant compliance dates for employers, farmers, and fishermen. Early preparation can ensure adherence to tax regulations and help avoid penalties.

January 15 - Employer’s Monthly Deposit Obligation

If you're an employer subject to the monthly deposit rule, January 15 is your deadline to deposit both Social Security and Medicare taxes, along with withheld income tax for December 2025. Notably, any nonpayroll withholding deposits for December 2025 are also due if the monthly deposit rule applies. It’s mandatory to execute employment tax deposits electronically unless your deposit liability is under $2,500 for the return period; in such cases, payments can be remitted quarterly or annually with the return.

January 15 - Obligations for Farmers and Fishermen

Farmers and fishermen should ensure their estimated tax for 2025 is paid by January 15 using Form 1040-ES. There's an alternative to wait and file your 2025 income tax return (Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR) by April 15. Failing to pay the estimated tax by January 16 necessitates filing your return and settling any due tax by March 2, 2026, to circumvent estimated tax penalties.
